Thompson is a residential area on Richmond's west side, between No. 1 and No. 2 Roads and centred on Granville Avenue and Thompson Community Centre. The street pattern runs to quiet crescents rather than a through grid, and a large share of the city's older single-family housing stock stands here. The scale stays low and even across most of the area.
Thompson Community Centre is the main public building in the neighborhood, and Granville Avenue carries the east-west movement through it. The western edge of the area opens onto Terra Nova and the Middle Arm dyke path, which gives residents a route to the waterfront without leaving the west side. The two numbered roads that frame the neighborhood, No. 1 to the west and No. 2 to the east, carry the north-south traffic.
Commerce in Thompson is small and neighborhood-scaled rather than mall-based. There is no shopping center inside the area and no long retail strip, so businesses that operate here work at the scale of a single unit and serve the surrounding blocks rather than drawing customers from across Richmond. That is the usual pattern in west-side areas built as housing first, with larger retail left to the arterial roads that frame them. Because the housing came first and the shopping did not follow, the commercial presence inside the boundaries stays thin. This directory does not list any businesses in Thompson at present.
Anything larger means leaving the neighborhood. A full grocery run or a mall trip takes residents east toward the city center and the Canada Line, or out to the arterial roads on either side of the area. The businesses to look for inside Thompson itself are the everyday kind, food, personal care and small local trades, working from Granville Avenue and the streets that connect to it rather than from a single commercial centre.
