About Boss Automotive 1996 Ltd

Family-run transmission specialist on Smith Street trading since 1975, rebuilding and repairing both automatic and manual gearboxes for domestic and imported cars. This is where other Richmond shops send transmission work.

Manual gearboxes are getting harder to find someone to rebuild, and anyone who drives one already knows how that phone call usually goes. Boss Automotive still takes them on, along with automatics. That is the reason other Richmond shops send transmission work its way for domestic and imported cars rather than attempting it in-house.

A rebuilt gearbox is a different order of job from brakes or a timing belt. It involves a full teardown, a great many small parts, and the judgement to know what needs replacing and what is fine. Most garages are set up for the first kind of work and not the second, so the specialists end up quietly serving the whole city from the back of an industrial street.

Smith Street sits in Bridgeport, the belt of warehouses, yards and light industry between Bridgeport Road and the north arm of the Fraser. This is where Richmond's working infrastructure lives, with trucking, storage, trades and the shops that keep everyone else moving. None of it is signposted for visitors and the street grid is unintuitive, so look at the map properly rather than assuming you will spot a sign from the road.

Transmission work gets quoted per job after someone has looked at the car, so expect a conversation rather than a number over the phone. Any shop worth using will talk you through what they found before they start pulling anything apart, and how that conversation goes is the best test of a garage there is.
