About Fisherman's Terrace Seafood Restaurant

A big, busy Cantonese dining room on the third floor of Aberdeen Centre, best known for made-to-order dim sum at lunch. Locals queue on weekends for har gow, rice rolls and egg tarts, then shop downstairs. Dinner shifts to seafood and banquet dishes.

Come hungry and come early, because weekend dim sum in this part of Richmond runs on a queue and late Sunday morning is the worst of it. A weekday visit is a different city altogether. The same food, a fraction of the wait, and nobody standing behind your chair waiting for it.

The restaurant sits on the upper level of Aberdeen Centre, the mall that anchors the Golden Village and the one most visitors see first. Made-to-order dim sum has largely displaced the trolley across Richmond over the past two decades, and the trade is a good one. First plates take a little longer and everything lands hot. Rooms of this scale generally turn toward seafood and banquet cooking in the evening, so a lunch visit and a dinner visit have little in common.

Geography does real work here. Aberdeen station puts you at the door without a car, which matters on a Sunday when traffic around the mall slows to a crawl, and Yaohan and Parker Place are a short walk south if you want to make an afternoon of it. Hazelbridge Way is the quieter spine behind the No. 3 Road frontage, so the block is easier to cross on foot than it looks from the road.

Dim sum in this city runs to an earlier clock than visitors expect, which catches out anyone driving in from Vancouver on a slow start. Treat it as a late breakfast rather than a lunch and the day works. That leaves the afternoon free for the rest of the district, which is the better use of a trip out here anyway.

What to Do in Richmond on a Rainy Day

Richmond rain does not arrive as a storm. It settles in for nine days. Here is the rotation I actually use when it does: the Oval, the Golden Village malls, the library and gallery at Minoru, Riverport with the kids, and why Steveston is better wet.
