Half of Richmond is farmland, a fact the malls and towers hide from anyone who only sees the city from No. 3 Road. The eastern side, out past No. 5 Road, is flat black delta soil under the Agricultural Land Reserve, and it grows things properly. Steveston Highway runs straight through the middle of it. Richmond Country Farms is a working family farm on that road with a market attached.
The market sells what the fields produce: potatoes, corn, berries and squash grown on site, alongside other BC fruit and preserves. Buying vegetables pulled a few hundred metres away is a different experience from buying them after a week in distribution. Corn makes the case better than anything else, because it loses sugar by the hour after picking. Local corn in August is not a marketing line, it is chemistry.
Two seasonal events pull crowds well beyond the usual farm-stand traffic, the sunflower festival and the pumpkin patch, and both draw families from across Metro Vancouver. Expect company, and expect slow going along Steveston Highway on a fine autumn weekend. A farm market runs on the growing season rather than on the calendar, which is the single most important thing to establish before driving out, because nothing deflates a Saturday like a January trip to a shut farm gate. Go early in the day if children are coming along to either event.
