About Wah Shang Supermarket

An older, no-frills Park Road supermarket that has outlasted flashier neighbors. Free parking, narrow aisles, and a genuinely pan-Asian shelf mix, with Chinese, Filipino, Malaysian and Indonesian pantry items sitting side by side at fair prices.

The stock on these shelves reflects what people in the surrounding blocks actually cook rather than what photographs well. The lighting is poor and the aisles are narrow. Wah Shang is that kind of grocery store, on Park Road, still going while flashier neighbors have opened and closed around it.

The shelf mix is what makes it useful. Chinese, Filipino, Malaysian and Indonesian pantry goods sit beside each other instead of being sorted into an international aisle, which is how a genuinely pan-Asian store works and how a lot of Richmond kitchens actually cook. Nothing in the building is designed to impress anybody.

Park Road sits behind the No. 3 Road retail in City Centre, close to the malls and the Canada Line but out of the main flow, and that position is part of why it has lasted. The large banner Asian supermarkets in this city are excellent and worth the trip for a big shop, but they are laid out for volume and they carry what sells everywhere. A smaller store carries what sells here.

That distinction matters if you are chasing one specific sauce or a brand remembered from a relative's kitchen. Half an hour walking these aisles beats driving to three big stores in a row, and the odds of finding the exact thing are better than the frontage suggests.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
