A family-run Steveston fixture since 1989, doing scratch breads, pies, cookies and custom cakes including eggless versions. The attached cafe serves all-day breakfast, sandwiches and a rotating homemade soup, so locals treat it as much a diner as a bakery.
Most visitors to Steveston never get this far north. The village pulls everyone toward the boardwalk, and the stretch of No. 1 Road above it stays residential and largely unnoticed by anyone who came for the day. Steveston Bakery sits up there, a bakery with a cafe attached, doing its own baking rather than finishing frozen product. The cafe side is why locals treat it as much like a diner as a bakery, and why it fills with people who are not going near the water.
The tourist economy here is concentrated in about six blocks. Everything north of that behaves like the suburb it is, and businesses along this run survive on regulars rather than on foot traffic spilling out of the parking lots. That gives a room like this one a different job. It works as a meeting place for the surrounding streets, the kind you end up in on a Tuesday morning because it is close, not because you planned a visit around it.
Custom cake work is the thing to plan ahead for. Any bakery building cakes to order needs lead time, and the more specific the request, the more notice is fair to give. Ring first if you are working to a date, and be ready to describe what you want in plain terms rather than showing a photograph of something built by somebody else. Otherwise this is a walk-in errand, best done early, before the tables get claimed by people who intend to stay an hour.
