About Damien's Belgian Waffles

A tiny family-run shop on Chatham Street making proper Liege waffles with pearl sugar, real butter and honey in about a dozen flavours, from vanilla through matcha and yuzu. They also take custom cake, pie and creme brulee orders for pickup.

Chatham Street runs one block back from the Steveston waterfront, and it is where the village keeps its smaller and more specific shops. Visitor traffic concentrates on Bayview and Moncton. Chatham is where you end up once you already know what you came for, which makes it a different kind of street entirely.

Liege waffles are a different food from the breakfast waffle most Canadians grew up on, and the difference deserves stating plainly. The dough is enriched and yeasted, studded with pearl sugar that caramelises against the hot iron, and the result is dense and chewy and meant to be eaten in your hand while walking. No syrup. No plate. It is street food in the original sense, which is why it suits this village so well.

Richmond has taken the form and run it through its own flavour vocabulary, so matcha and yuzu turn up next to vanilla on counters all over the city. That is a fair description of how most imported foods land here. The technique stays intact and the palette shifts.

Timing matters more than people think. A waffle eaten on the way to the dyke works. A waffle eaten after a full meal does not, and Steveston is best treated as a walking afternoon anyway: the boardwalk, the fishing dock where boats sell off the deck, then west along the trail towards Garry Point with something in your hand. Trade down here thins noticeably outside the summer months, so a February visit finds a far quieter street than the one in the photographs.

Richmond BC Fall Family Activities

Fall is the best season in Richmond and I will argue about it. The dyke in low light, snow geese off Sturgeon Bank, pumpkin fields on the east side, bog trails nobody uses, and a proper indoor plan for the weeks when it rains for nine days straight.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
