South Richmond is the right part of the city for a garage. No. 5 Road running down through Ironwood is a mix of light industrial units, auto shops and suburban retail, and the density of trades along here means shops compete on reputation rather than on visibility from a main road. Nobody drives past and pulls in on impulse. People come because somebody sent them.
The geography helps in another way. Ironwood puts you near the Steveston Highway and a short hop from Highway 99, so dropping a car off before heading out of town works better than it would from a shop up in the Golden Village. There is enough ordinary retail in the area to fill an hour if you need to wait somewhere nearby.
Ask for the estimate in writing and ask which items are safety and which are maintenance. That is generic advice for any garage, and it matters more at an independent than at a dealership, because there is no service advisor script standing between you and the person who actually looked at the car. Phone before turning up with something that will not start.
