About Kam Do Bakery (No. 3 Road)

A long-running Cantonese bakery near Brighouse station where you grab a tray and tongs and load up from self-serve shelves. Portuguese egg tarts, pineapple buns, pork buns and sausage rolls come out through the day, and it stays open until 9pm. Cash only.

You pick up a metal tray and a pair of tongs at the door, and that gesture is most of the experience. Cantonese bakeries in Richmond run on self-serve, and this long-running shop near Brighouse station works the format properly: Portuguese egg tarts, pineapple buns, pork buns and sausage rolls coming out through the day rather than all at once in the morning. Bring cash, because the till takes nothing else.

Timing matters more here than in most food categories. Trays refill in waves, and a bun that has been sitting since noon is a different object from one that came out ten minutes ago. Late afternoon is usually a decent window. Staying open until nine also puts this shop well past the closing time of most bakeries in the city, which counts for something when you want something warm on the way home rather than at breakfast.

The 6211 address sits on the stretch of No. 3 Road where the Canada Line runs overhead and Brighouse station leaves a short walk to the door. This corridor has changed enormously in twenty years, with towers replacing low retail on both sides, and the Cantonese bakeries are one of the few things that carried straight through it.

Egg tart preference is a genuine argument in this city, flaky pastry against the shortcrust version, and both camps are well represented within a few hundred metres of this door.

Minoru Park and the Richmond Cultural Centre

Minoru is not the prettiest park in Richmond BC, but it is the most useful. A library, a free art gallery, a media lab, a pool, a track, the chapel and the ponds, all a short walk from the end of the Canada Line. Here is how a Broadmoor kid actually uses it.
