One or two proper snow events a winter is all Richmond gets, and the city is caught out by every single one of them. A strata or a commercial property with a clearing contractor already lined up sits in a completely different position from one phoning around on the morning it lands. That is the least visible argument for a maintenance contract and the most persuasive.
The rest of the year is quieter work. Strata, commercial and industrial grounds maintenance is invisible when it is done properly, which is why almost nobody thinks about the industry at all. Somebody is on a schedule cutting, pruning, blowing and clearing, and the only time a council notices the line in the budget is the month the standard slips. Lawn installs and irrigation startups and repairs fill out the calendar.
Irrigation runs on the same logic as the snow. The spring startup and the autumn shutdown are boring scheduled jobs that exist to prevent expensive unscheduled ones, and skipping them is how a system ends up needing replacement rather than servicing.
Past No. 6 Road the city stops behaving like a city. You get farmland, blueberry and cranberry fields, greenhouse operations and the industrial yards that support them, all of it flat and laced with drainage ditches. A firm based on Triangle Road out here has room to work and a road network that reaches Bridgeport, Ironwood or Vancouver without crossing the congested middle of Richmond, which is worth more on a schedule than it looks on a map.
