The Fraser is the reason a tackle shop makes sense out here. Richmond sits on the delta with the main arm on one side and the north arm on the other, and the river carries salmon runs and a sturgeon fishery that pulls anglers from across the region. Sturgeon are the serious draw: catch-and-release, tagged, and big enough that for once the stories hold up.
East Richmond is the half of the city nobody photographs. Past No. 6 Road the grid thins into farmland, greenhouses and blueberry fields, with Westminster Highway running long and straight towards the Queensborough end and the river off to the north the whole way. It is flat, quiet and genuinely rural in stretches, which surprises people who think of Richmond as the airport and the malls.
Rods, reels, terminal tackle and bait are what a shop like this carries, but the stock is not really the point. Local advice is. A big-box sports floor cannot supply it, because nobody on that shift was on the river this morning or spoke to twenty people who were. Tackle shops trade in current information, and current information is the difference between a good day and a long one.
Anyone new to fishing this river should sort out licensing before anything else. Rules on the Fraser change through the season and by species, and the regulations covering sturgeon are specific about handling and release. Read the current ones before you go rather than after. The drive out east is pleasant enough that a wasted trip stings less than it would elsewhere, though it is still a wasted trip.
