About Wong's Greenhouse & Nursery

Family greenhouse operation on No. 2 Road near Steveston that grows about 90 percent of what it sells across roughly 25,000 square feet of glass. Best known for hanging baskets, geraniums and bedding plants, plus bulbs in fall.

Roughly 90 percent of what sells here is grown on site, across about 25,000 square feet of glass. That changes what you take home. The stock has not been trucked up from Oregon and parked in a lot for a fortnight, so it has been living in local light and local temperatures, which is most of the reason a hanging basket either thrives on your porch or sulks for a month.

Wong's is a family growing operation at the southern end of No. 2 Road, past the residential blocks and heading towards Steveston, where the lots get bigger and the greenhouses appear. Richmond is farmland across most of its area, a fact that surprises anyone who only knows No. 3 Road. Hanging baskets, geraniums and bedding plants are the known strengths, with bulbs arriving in the fall.

Seasonal rhythm is the thing to plan around in this category. Everything happens in short windows. The weeks around Mother's Day are when baskets sell and when the selection is at its widest, and by July the choice has narrowed sharply. Fall is bulbs. Winter is quiet. Going early in the season beats going late, and a weekday beats a Saturday if you actually want to look at things properly rather than shuffle along behind somebody's trolley. Greenhouse hours move with the season out here, so ring before driving down.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
