About O'Hare's GastroPub & Liquor Store

An everyday south Richmond pub on Steveston Highway with its own liquor store attached, closed Mondays. There is a beer club, Taco Tuesday and occasional beer and wine festivals, so regulars treat it as a local rather than a destination.

A local is where you end up on a Wednesday because you did not want to cook and the house was too quiet. That is a different function from going out. South Richmond has fewer rooms serving it than the population would suggest. O'Hare's sits on Steveston Highway with a liquor store attached, which is the classic BC arrangement and still the most practical one.

Regulars treat it as a local rather than a destination, and that shapes the room more than anything on the wall does. You get people who know each other instead of people who read about it somewhere, which is the whole distinction between a neighborhood pub and a night out. The attached liquor store earns its place too, because the density of options along this part of Steveston Highway is nothing like the City Centre.

Steveston Highway is the belt between the village and Ironwood, running east across the south of the island. It is a driving stretch: wide, quick, with plazas set back behind their forecourts. That shapes how a pub here gets used. Nobody is walking twenty blocks to it, so somebody in the group is driving and the evening ends earlier than it would in a walkable neighborhood. South Richmond has always worked this way. The compensation is that the rooms fill with people who live within a few minutes of them, which is exactly what a local is supposed to be.
