About Choice School

Independent K-8 school in east Richmond built specifically for gifted and twice-exceptional learners, with a Ministry special education designation. Small classes, inquiry-led work and extension projects rather than acceleration for its own sake.

Twice-exceptional is a term most parents meet only at the point they need it. It describes a child who is gifted and also has a learning difference or a diagnosis that a standard classroom handles badly, and it explains how a bright kid can be bored and struggling at the same time. Choice School is built for that group specifically, kindergarten through grade eight, with a Ministry special education designation behind it.

The approach described here is inquiry-led work with extension projects rather than acceleration, and the distinction is worth understanding before you tour anywhere at all. Acceleration moves a child through the curriculum faster, which solves boredom now and creates a different problem two years later. Extension goes deeper into the same material instead. Neither is universally correct. A school that has chosen one deliberately and can explain the reasoning has at least thought about the question, which is more than can be assumed.

Westminster Highway east of No. 6 Road runs through farmland and greenhouse country, and a school out there gets space that would be impossible anywhere near the corridor. It also means a commute for essentially every family, since almost nobody lives within walking distance of that stretch. Richmond is compact enough that crossing it takes fifteen or twenty minutes outside rush hour, though Highway 99 and the Knight Street approaches at the wrong time of day make that estimate look optimistic. Drive the route at the hour you would actually be driving it before anything else, because a commute that fails in February will settle the question for you.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
