About River Road Cafe

Unassuming Bridgeport cafe near the Fraser serving diner-style breakfasts and lunches alongside the coffee. A favorite of people working nearby and of cyclists riding the River Road route, with generous portions and prices to match.

River Road is one of the few stretches of Richmond that still feels like a working riverfront. It runs along the north arm of the Fraser through Bridgeport, past marine businesses, log booms, warehousing and the occasional tug tied up alongside. Cyclists like it precisely because it is flat, straight and largely free of the traffic that clogs Bridgeport Road a few hundred metres inland.

A diner-style cafe fits that setting exactly. Breakfast and lunch alongside the coffee is the correct answer to a road like this one. The mix of trades working out of the surrounding warehouses and riders stopping partway through a route gives this stretch a character nobody could design deliberately. Nothing about it is trying to be seen.

Bridgeport gets written off as the big-box and warehouse belt, which it partly is. The casino, the wholesale sheds, car dealerships, a great deal of concrete. The riverside strip is the counterargument, and the flat run east of the Oak Street bridge is one of the better easy rides in the city. Somewhere to stop for eggs partway through turns exercise into a morning out.

Parking around here is easier than anywhere else in that part of Richmond, since the neighbors are industrial rather than retail. Bridgeport station is a proper walk rather than a stroll, so this is a drive or a ride rather than a transit trip. The whole strip runs on working-day rhythms, which makes early the right time to aim for and the middle of the afternoon a gamble anywhere along this road.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
