About Samsoonie Noodle and Rice

A Korean noodle and dumpling shop on Westminster Highway that makes its own mandu and sells them frozen by the bag. Bibimbap, japchae and kimchi stew round out a short menu. Small, cheap and fast, with a steady weekday lunch crowd.

The house mandu is the reason to know this address. Samsoonie makes its own dumplings and sells them frozen by the bag, which is the detail worth passing to anyone who cooks at home and wants something decent in the freezer for a Tuesday night. Beyond dumplings the list runs to bibimbap, japchae and kimchi stew. It is a short menu, and in a room this size that usually means the kitchen has settled on what it does.

The address is Westminster Highway in City Centre, close enough to the No. 3 Road spine that a visit folds into an errand rather than becoming one. Korean cooking gets overshadowed in Richmond by the sheer weight of Chinese restaurants around it, and the small noodle and stew shops are where the value hides. Prices land at the cheap end of the category. The weekday lunch crowd moves through fast.

City Centre does not reward wandering the way Steveston does. What it offers instead is density, and the stretch of Westminster between Minoru and No. 3 has enough packed along it that you rarely need to move the car twice. Brighouse station is a short walk from the door, so this also works as a stop on either side of a Canada Line trip. Treat the place as a lunch counter first and a freezer stop second. If the frozen dumplings are the actual mission, buy more than one bag, because a single one disappears faster than anybody plans for.
