Swirl marks in dark paint come from brush tunnels, and once they are there they do not come out without machine polishing. That is the whole case for washing by hand. The trade is time, because hand work happens at human speed, and waiting is the price of not having your clear coat scoured by whatever the previous vehicle left behind in the bristles.
Minoru Boulevard runs parallel to No. 3 Road through the middle of City Centre, past Minoru Park, the aquatic centre, the library and the older apartment blocks. It is the civic spine of Richmond in a way that No. 3 Road, for all its traffic, has never been. A wash tucked off it is well placed for the towers around Brighouse, where a great deal of housing comes with a parking stall and nowhere you could reasonably wash a car yourself without annoying the building manager.
Washing a car in Richmond in November is an act of faith, and the argument for doing it anyway is corrosion rather than appearance. Wind carries salt in off the water. Roads throw grit up all winter, and it collects in the places you cannot see until something starts to rust through. Sand tracked back from the dyke and the beach at Garry Point ends up in the carpets, which is the other half of the argument in this city. Arriving early is the whole strategy at any hand wash, since the queue only grows through the day and never shrinks.
