About Garry Point Grill & Fish 'N' Chips

The chip shop at the Garry Point end of the village, frying sustainably sourced fish with hand-cut chips, plus burgers, poutine and salads. Open every day until early evening, which makes it a sensible takeout stop before a walk out to the park.

Walk south down Seventh Avenue far enough and the houses give way to grass, driftwood and open water at Garry Point. The chip shop sits at that end of the village, which is the most useful thing to know about it. Fish and chips in Steveston is a crowded category with a clear geography to it: the windows closest to the boardwalk catch the July visitors, and the shops set back a little do steadier business with people who actually live here.

The kitchen fries sustainably sourced fish with hand-cut chips, and the board also runs to burgers, poutine and salads. That last part matters more than it sounds when one person in the group does not want batter. Treat the place as a takeout stop on the way to the park rather than a sit-down evening plan, because the whole point of being down here is the walk that comes after.

Garry Point Park is the payoff and the reason to time a visit properly. Wind comes straight off the Strait with nothing to break it, the late-summer sunsets are the best in the city, and the park fills fast on the first warm Saturday of the year. Bring a jacket even in August. Anyone carrying food down to the driftwood should keep a hand on the box, because the gulls take an immediate and professional interest in fried fish and they are not remotely shy about acting on it.
