About Dave's Fish & Chips

A no-frills Moncton Street chip shop that regulars rank against the wharf stands. Halibut, cod and salmon come battered to order with hand-cut fries, plus chowder and burgers. Small dining room, steady takeout trade, and less of a lineup than the waterfront.

Most visitors to Steveston never get past the first fish window they see, and the ones down at the wharf have the view to justify it. They also have the July lineup that comes with a view. Dave's sits up on Moncton Street a few minutes inland, which is most of what regulars mean when they say the wait is shorter. Halibut, cod and salmon go into batter to order, the fries are hand cut, and there is chowder and burgers for whoever in your party did not come for fish.

A good share of the trade walks out the door in paper, which is normal for the village. People carry it down to the boardwalk or toward Garry Point and eat outside. On a warm evening the pattern is easy to read: the waterfront collects the visitors, the side streets collect everyone else. That is not a knock on the wharf stands. It is just how the village sorts itself out.

Moncton Street is the spine of Steveston Village, so a stop here folds neatly into everything else along it, and the water is two blocks south. Parking thins out on summer weekends and the streets fill from mid-morning onward, so walking or cycling in is easier than it sounds. Off season the village empties and moves at a different speed, which is the better time to come if you would rather not queue for anything at all. Either way this is a chip shop rather than a destination, and it works best treated that way.
