Bayview Street is the waterfront edge of Steveston village, the row that faces the boats, and it is where most visitors end up eventually regardless of what they planned. Fish and chips dominate this block for obvious reasons. Barbecue is the outlier, which is exactly why the Hog Shack works where it sits: it is what you eat in Steveston when you do not want fish, and on a summer weekend that is a large and badly served group of people.
The smoking happens in house with rubs made on site, across brisket, ribs, pulled pork and chicken. You order at the counter, there is craft beer, and there are big screens with the game on, so the room functions as a sports bar as much as a barbecue joint. Burnt ends and cornbread are the sides people come back for. Nothing about the format is fussy, and nothing about it needs to be.
Steveston in July is a different place from Steveston in February, and that shapes any visit. The village fills from late morning on a sunny weekend, the streets near the wharf slow to a crawl, and counter service moves through a queue faster than a full dining room ever will. Village errands are best done before ten for exactly that reason. If you are coming out from elsewhere in Richmond, make a day of it, because the cannery, the wharf and the dyke are all a short walk from the table.
