Persian and Mediterranean cooking is not what most visitors expect to find at the bottom of Steveston, which is a large part of why this room registers at all. The blocks facing the channel trade heavily on the view, and the food along them tends toward the safe end of familiar. Something charcoal-grilled and unfamiliar breaks that pattern up.
Bayview faces working water rather than scenery. Fishing boats, the old cannery buildings, wind coming off the river, gulls with strong opinions. On a warm evening it is the best stretch to sit anywhere in Richmond and everybody knows it, so the patios along here fill from about the time the light goes gold and stay full until it goes entirely.
Parking is the standing problem down here. The lots near the wharf turn over slowly through the summer and on any weekend the weather cooperates, and the sensible move is to leave the car up on Chatham or Moncton and walk the last few blocks in. Five minutes on foot saves fifteen of circling. Steveston also runs on a seasonal rhythm that catches people out, since the village winds down considerably earlier once the tourist months end and the evening crowd thins back to residents walking dogs along the boardwalk. That is the version most locals prefer.
