Ordering ahead is the difference between eating at seven and eating at eight, and on a summer weekend in the village that gap only gets wider. Steveston Pizza Company works from Moncton Street, a block in from the boardwalk, in the middle of a village that otherwise runs to fish and chips, pub food and family restaurants. A pizza operation sitting at an angle to all of that is a good part of the appeal.
Pizza made to order is a slower proposition than a slice under a heat lamp, and weekends bring a wait. Anyone arriving hungry with a car full of people should treat the phone as the first step rather than the door. The walk down from the water takes about two minutes, which makes collection easy once you have already spent an hour on the boardwalk.
Opinion in the village splits on this place, which is usually a sign that a business is doing something specific rather than something safe. Both camps are defensible, and the only real advice is to know which one you are in before you order. Street parking and the small lots are hopeless on a warm Saturday, so the usual Steveston solution applies: leave the car a few blocks north in the residential grid and walk down. The walk is pleasant, and it puts the wharf and the boardwalk on your route in either direction.

A no-frills Moncton Street chip shop that regulars rank against the wharf stands. Halibut, cod and salmon come battered to order with hand-cut fries, plus chowder and burgers. Small dining room, steady takeout trade, and less of a lineup than the waterfront.

A Steveston institution since 1985, Pajo's serves fish and chips from a float at the bottom of the wharf ramp. Order at the window, then eat at picnic tables over the water while the fishing boats unload. Casual, outdoors, and dogs are welcome.
