Some prescriptions cannot be filled off a shelf. A medication may be needed in a strength nobody manufactures, or as a liquid rather than a tablet, which matters when you are dosing a child, a pet or somebody who cannot swallow. Compounding is the work of making that up, and it is the clearest thing independent pharmacies still do that the chains have quietly stepped back from. McCue on Cook Road handles compounding alongside ordinary dispensing and home healthcare supplies.
Home healthcare is the other reason people end up at a counter like this rather than one inside a grocery store. Mobility aids, dressings and the equipment that comes with looking after somebody at home are not things you want to order from a website in the week you need them. An independent carrying that category is worth knowing about before the situation arises rather than during it, which is true everywhere and especially true in a city with an ageing population living in towers.
Cook Road runs behind the Richmond Centre block in City Centre, so this is walkable from Brighouse station and from most of the surrounding apartments. Weekend pharmacy coverage across the city is patchier than people assume, so a phone call before a Sunday trip saves a wasted one. Take-home naloxone kits are distributed free through participating pharmacies across British Columbia, and asking at a counter you already use is the least awkward way to pick one up.
