Day Spas
Combined salon and spa on Garden City Road near Blundell, where you can get skin and body treatments and hair done in one visit. Appointment-based, and a practical mid-island option if downtown Richmond parking puts you off.
Consolidating two appointments into one visit is worth more to most people than any single item on a service list. Hair on one side, skin and body treatments on the other, booked into the same window, saves a second trip across the city on an afternoon that was hard enough to clear in the first place. That combination is the practical draw at this Garden City Road salon and spa.
Garden City Road runs north to south through the middle of the island, roughly parallel to No. 3 Road and carrying a fraction of the traffic. Around Blundell it is mostly residential with small commercial pockets, which is a useful thing to know when you are booking something that will take a couple of hours. You are not circling a parkade or watching a meter somewhere in the City Centre.
Mid-island Richmond gets overlooked in favour of the malls, and that is a mistake for services of this kind. Businesses along Garden City and Blundell serve the surrounding neighborhoods rather than a regional catchment, which usually means smaller rooms, quieter weekday afternoons and staff who are not running six chairs at once. That suits some people and not others, depending entirely on what you want out of the visit. Some want the energy of a busy salon. Others want two hours where nobody is shouting over a blow dryer, and mid-island is firmly the second kind of place.
In the Blundell neighbourhood of Richmond.

Longer reads from the editor, with the places worth a detour linked inside them.
The Night Market's final season is the loud story. The quieter one: free admission at the Cannery ends Monday, Britannia keeps summer hours through Sunday, and Steveston does sunsets better than anyone.

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.

The West Dyke Trail is about five and a half kilometres of flat gravel between Terra Nova Rural Park and Garry Point, and I ride it most mornings. Here is what is actually at the north end, which way to walk so the wind is on your side, and why winter is the better season for it.
