Milltown Bar & Grill
About Milltown Bar & Grill
A waterfront bar and grill beside Milltown Marina with three patios: one facing the North Shore mountains, another looking out at the Fraser and the airport's main runway. Pub food, Sunday prime rib and a genuinely rare view.
Two of the three patios face something genuinely worth looking at, one toward the North Shore mountains and one out at the Fraser and the airport's main runway. The whole arrangement sits beside Milltown Marina among working boats and boatyards. Richmond has a great deal of waterfront and almost nowhere to drink on it, which is the odd thing about a city ringed by dykes and river arms. Outside Steveston, public access to the water with a beer in hand is close to nonexistent. Milltown is the exception.
The setting does most of the work. You are among boats rather than on a landscaped promenade, planes come in low over the water, and the mountains sit across the whole view. Pub food and Sunday prime rib are what the kitchen is known for, which is the right register for a room like this. Nobody is asking the place to be a restaurant. It is better for not trying to be one.
Finding it is the only real obstacle. The site sits off the main roads in the marina and industrial belt along the north side of Richmond, and you will not stumble across it on the way to something else, so put the address in before you leave. Patio seats at a place with a view like this are the first things gone on the first warm evening of the year, so a weekday is the better bet. Sunset over the North Shore from the right side of the river is worth arranging a week around.

The Night Market's final season is the loud story. The quieter one: free admission at the Cannery ends Monday, Britannia keeps summer hours through Sunday, and Steveston does sunsets better than anyone.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC
Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.

Terra Nova Rural Park and the West Dyke Trail
The West Dyke Trail is about five and a half kilometres of flat gravel between Terra Nova Rural Park and Garry Point, and I ride it most mornings. Here is what is actually at the north end, which way to walk so the wind is on your side, and why winter is the better season for it.
