About Parkhill Seafood Restaurant

Chiu Chow and Cantonese specialist on Westminster Highway, walkable from the Canada Line. Dim sum at lunch plus Chiu Chow classics such as cold marinated goose and oyster omelette that are genuinely hard to find elsewhere in Richmond.

Cold marinated goose is the dish to order first, because it is the clearest marker of a Chiu Chow kitchen and almost nothing else in Richmond serves it. Parkhill runs both halves of a divided menu: dim sum at lunch, and the Teochew plates that sit next to Cantonese cooking without being the same thing. Oyster omelette turns up, along with a lot of braising and seafood treated plainly and confidently. Most kitchens around here do not bother carrying any of it.

Westminster Highway through City Centre is a working street rather than a strip you stroll. It carries traffic between No. 3 Road and the older residential blocks east of it, with offices, banks and second-floor restaurants above ordinary ground-floor units. You can walk here from the Canada Line. That is not true of most of Richmond's better Chinese restaurants, and it counts for a lot on a wet evening. The downside is that nothing about the street frontage tells you what is upstairs.

If roast goose is your only reference point, the marinated version is a completely different texture and a useful education. Bring a few people so the table can cover both halves of what the kitchen does, because ordering only dim sum leaves the Chiu Chow side unexplored. The surrounding blocks empty of office workers in the early afternoon, which changes the character of the room from one hour to the next.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
