You go to Steveston for the water, and the smart move is to get food you can carry down to it. Hawaiian plate lunch travels better than most things. One plate, one hand, no cutlery emergency halfway along the boardwalk. The format is fixed and the fixedness is the point: a protein, rice, something starchy alongside, done in a single container.
Bayview Street runs along the back edge of the village toward the piers, so the address matters as much as the food. A good share of what gets sold on this stretch leaves in a box, and that is not a complaint. The benches face the water and the boats are working in front of you. Bring napkins. The gulls in Steveston are shameless and they have worked out what a takeout container means.
Warm weather suits this best, because the walk is what makes it. Steveston on a sunny Saturday is busier than people who have not been down in a while expect, and the village core fills from late morning onward. Anyone driving in from elsewhere in the city should consider stopping further up around Chatham or Second Avenue and walking the last few blocks. In winter the same trip is a completely different proposition. The boardwalk empties, the wind comes straight off the water, and eating outside stops being the obvious plan. That is the version of the village that belongs to the people who live in it.
