Something goes wrong with a dog on a Sunday and the immediate question is who is actually open. That problem bites harder in south Richmond than most people realize until they are living it, because the fallback when nothing local is available is a drive to an emergency hospital in Vancouver or Burnaby with an animal that is already frightened.
Ironwood Animal Hospital sits in the Coppersmith plaza on Steveston Highway, at the south end of the city where the built form is low-rise complexes set back from a wide road. Everything down here assumes a car, which for once suits the situation. Carrying a stressed animal across a large parkade and into a lift is worse than any of the alternatives, and the south end simply does not present that problem.
Richmond is not short of veterinary clinics. Weekend and evening availability is the scarce resource, and working out which practices cover which days before you need the information is one of those pieces of local knowledge worth writing down somewhere findable. The dyke trails across the south of the island fill every morning with people whose dogs are registered at one clinic or another down here, and the answer to who is open when circulates that way as much as it does online. Ask before you need to know.
