RAPS runs one of the largest non-profit animal hospitals in Canada, and it is here in Richmond, which is a fact more people should know. The Regional Animal Protection Society operates it out of Smallwood Place in the east of the city, open seven days, taking walk-ins and urgent cases, treating exotics as well as cats and dogs, and subsidising care for owners who cannot cover it.
That last part is the piece that matters most. Veterinary costs have climbed steeply, and the gap between what a family can pay and what a treatment costs is exactly where animals get surrendered. A non-profit with a subsidy programme changes that arithmetic. Taking rabbits, reptiles and birds fills another real hole, because that kind of care is scarce across the whole region.
Smallwood Place sits in the Bridgeport area, in the low industrial belt near the Knight Street bridge and the Highway 99 connections. Driving there is straightforward from most of the Lower Mainland. Transit works but takes noticeably longer, which matters when the trip is urgent.
An urgent case goes better for everyone with a phone call on the way in, so the team knows what is arriving before it comes through the door. That is true of any animal hospital, and it counts for more at one taking walk-ins alongside booked appointments.
