About Kisamos Greek Taverna

A casual Greek taverna a block off the boardwalk, doing souvlaki, roast lamb, calamari and platters meant for sharing. It has been a Steveston fixture for years and is the neighborhood default for an unfussy family dinner with a glass of wine.

Steveston in February is a different village from Steveston in July. The summer version is the boardwalk crowd, the queue for fish and chips and the coaches at the cannery. The rest of the year it is mostly people who live nearby, eating dinner somewhere they do not have to think about. Kisamos Greek Taverna belongs to that second version of the place.

Greek food suits the way this end of Richmond eats. Plates come out meant for sharing, the table fills in the middle rather than in front of each person, and nobody has to perform an opinion about any of it. That is the appeal of a taverna as a category. It is warm, it is loud enough that a child making noise goes unnoticed, and a glass of wine is part of the arrangement rather than an occasion.

Moncton Street is the village's main run, a block in from the water, with the boardwalk and Fisherman's Wharf just south of it. Parking in Steveston is street spots and small lots, and it gets genuinely tight on a warm weekend afternoon. The better plan is an evening once the day visitors have cleared out, or a winter weeknight when the village belongs to the neighborhood again and the walk down from the residential grid takes five minutes in the dark and costs nothing.

I live four blocks off Moncton Street, so this is the Steveston I actually use: where to park before the Bayview lots fill, how to buy fish straight off the boats at the wharf, the honest answer to the Pajo's versus Dave's question, and why the history here is not decoration.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.
