The cafe inside the 1895 Steveston Hotel serves a straightforward breakfast until early afternoon - eggs, bacon, hash browns and coffee. Unpretentious, cheap, and a genuine piece of village history that predates every patio on the waterfront.
Eggs, bacon and hash browns arrive cooked plain on purpose, and that is the whole proposition at the cafe inside the Steveston Hotel. Prices sit at the bottom of the range in a village that has otherwise drifted upmarket. The building is one of the oldest still standing in Richmond, a wooden survivor from the cannery era rather than a reconstruction of one, and very little of that stock is left anywhere in the Lower Mainland.
Third Avenue sits one street back from the main tourist current on Moncton, and the difference in atmosphere is noticeable. Fewer people are photographing their plates. The village has plenty of newer rooms doing sourdough toast and oat milk, and there is nothing wrong with any of that, but a counter that has never adjusted its breakfast to suit the market is worth something on its own terms.
Come early and treat this as a morning plan. Steveston fills steadily through a summer weekend, and by noon the village belongs to visitors, so the good hour is the one before the parking gets difficult. The water is under five minutes away on foot, which makes the obvious sequence breakfast first, then the boardwalk, then whatever else. The building is worth a look either way. This is the working history of a cannery town, still in use rather than preserved behind glass, and that is a rarer thing than the heritage plaques along the waterfront suggest.

A Steveston institution since 1985, Pajo's serves fish and chips from a float at the bottom of the wharf ramp. Order at the window, then eat at picnic tables over the water while the fishing boats unload. Casual, outdoors, and dogs are welcome.
