Family-run Punjabi kitchen that outgrew its small Moncton Street takeout counter and moved into a larger Bayview dining room. A dozen curries, biryani, Indo-Chinese dishes and vegetarian platters, open daily from late morning until nine.
Indo-Chinese is the part of this menu worth steering a newcomer toward. It is a real cuisine with a century of history in Kolkata rather than a fusion novelty, and it is badly underrepresented on this side of the river. Around it sit about a dozen curries, biryani and vegetarian platters.
Steveston is not where most of Metro Vancouver thinks of going for Punjabi food. The village reads as fish, chips, ice cream and the cannery museum, and South Asian cooking in this region gets mentally filed under Surrey. That geography is out of date. Village Curry & Spice started as a small takeout counter on Moncton Street, outgrew it, and moved into a larger family-run dining room on Bayview.
Bayview Street runs along the water at the south edge of the village, so a meal here comes with the same walk out as any other Steveston dinner. You get the boardwalk, the boats at the wharf, and the dyke trail heading west toward Garry Point. Eating well and then having somewhere flat and open to walk it off is not something most restaurants can offer, and after heavy food it is close to a public service.
Parking in the village tightens on summer weekends and is straightforward the rest of the year. If you are taking food away rather than sitting down, carrying it out to Garry Point and eating with the strait in front of you is a decent Friday evening by anyone's standards.
