About Richmond Sports & Fitness

Family-run 50,000 sq ft club off No. 5 Road with cardio and free-weight floors, indoor basketball and volleyball courts, a turf strip, squash, boxing, a sauna and a women-only section. Opens at 4am on weekdays for shift workers.

Fifty thousand square feet is a lot of gym, and the scale is what separates this one from the chains. Richmond Sports & Fitness is family run, with cardio and free-weight floors, indoor basketball and volleyball courts, a turf strip, squash, boxing, a sauna and a women-only section. No single-format studio can match that range.

Indoor court time is the genuinely scarce thing here. Basketball and volleyball are enormous in this city, community center gyms are booked solid months out, and pickup games get squeezed into whatever slots are left over. Having courts inside a private club changes the calculation entirely for anyone who plays regularly rather than occasionally.

Richmond runs on shift work in a way people commuting into downtown Vancouver do not always register. The airport, the warehouses, the trucking yards and the hotels all operate around the clock, and a club big enough to absorb people arriving at odd points in the day is serving its actual neighborhood rather than a marketing persona.

No. 5 Road runs the length of Richmond's eastern side, and this stretch of East Cambie is warehouses, light industry and big-lot buildings, which is exactly the kind of ground where a club this size is affordable to run. You drive there. Transit exists but is slow, and the trip is not one you would want to make twice in a day, so treat it as somewhere you build a routine around rather than somewhere you drop into.

The Night Market's final season is the loud story. The quieter one: free admission at the Cannery ends Monday, Britannia keeps summer hours through Sunday, and Steveston does sunsets better than anyone.

Where Locals Actually Eat in Richmond BC

Nothing on Alexandra Road is a secret. It is just in a strip mall with bad signage and no patio, which is why visitors never find it. Here is how I actually use Richmond's plazas and food courts, which specialists are worth the drive, and when not to bother.

Terra Nova Rural Park and the West Dyke Trail

The West Dyke Trail is about five and a half kilometres of flat gravel between Terra Nova Rural Park and Garry Point, and I ride it most mornings. Here is what is actually at the north end, which way to walk so the wind is on your side, and why winter is the better season for it.
