Maternity retail has thinned out badly: the chains shrank, department stores cut their sections, and most of what remains went online, which is fine for a nursing top and useless when you are seven months along and need to know whether something actually fits. Steveston Village Maternity is one of very few dedicated shops left anywhere in this city.
The stock spans pregnancy and nursing clothing, baby and kids' wear, footwear and accessories, which is the right mix for a small store because it keeps customers coming back after the baby arrives. Shops like this survive on repeat visits and word of mouth rather than on passing trade, and the village helps with that. Steveston has a lot of young families and a lot of people who would rather buy locally than send another box back to a warehouse.
Call ahead if you are coming for something specific in a particular size. A small independent carries depth in what it believes in rather than everything in every size, and that is the trade you make in exchange for being able to try things on and ask a real question of a real person. Moncton Street is compact enough to do on foot, and the shop sits in the middle of the retail stretch, so a visit combines easily with everything else in the village. Park once and treat it as an hour out rather than a single errand, which is more or less how Steveston works for everything.
