Steveston feeds its visitors fish, and a village that does one thing well can leave a gap for everything else. Wharf & Flame fills that gap with a family-run Texas-style smokehouse near the far end of Bayview Street, working through brisket, pulled pork, lamb shank and smoked chicken, with a lounge side that pours beer and cocktails. Portions run large.
Barbecue is a category that has thinned out across Metro Vancouver over the past decade, so a smokehouse still running is worth noting. Smoked meat also carries a practical wrinkle that catches people out. Kitchens cook it in fixed batches, and when a cut is gone for the day it is gone, which is true of every smokehouse anywhere and not a criticism of this one. Arriving earlier in the service is the usual advice.
The Bayview end is the newer face of the village, with condos over ground-floor retail, wide sidewalks, and the strip set a few steps back from the water while the boardwalk and the working docks sit just beyond. It reads differently from Moncton Street, which is older, tighter and carries most of the tourist traffic. That difference matters in July, when the village fills up and every seat near the water is spoken for. These blocks stay calmer on a summer Saturday than the core does, and the extra two minutes of walking buys a noticeably better afternoon.
