Eating in Steveston splits along a line most visitors never notice. There is the summer trade, which means fish and chips, ice cream and queues near Moncton Street, and there is the year-round trade, which is where a place like this one lives. The second kind has to feed the same people in February as in August, and that shapes a kitchen far more than tourism ever does.
The address is on No. 1 Road, north of the village core and closer to the schools and the residential grid. It is a couple of minutes from the waterfront and far easier to reach on a summer weekend than anything down on Bayview. Leaving a car up here is generally less of a fight than in the village core, which is its own quiet argument for eating at this end.
Steveston's year-round rooms tend to be small, and small rooms run on planning. Sort out where you are sitting before you leave the house rather than from the pavement outside, particularly at weekends when the whole neighborhood decides to eat out at once. The stretch of No. 1 Road running north from here passes the secondary school and carries on toward Francis Road, through some of the flattest and most walkable residential blocks in the city. Plenty of people arrive on foot from a few streets away, which is not something you can say about most of Richmond.

A taphouse near No. 1 Road and Moncton with a deep BC beer list and a long wine selection. Comfort food, burgers, salads and shareables. Roomier and less touristy than the waterfront spots, which makes it a dependable evening option.

A small family-run Hawaiian spot in the Bayview block near the Steveston waterfront. Plate lunches, kalua pork and loco moco come out fast and cheap, with rice and mac salad on the side. Limited seating, so many orders head out to the boardwalk.
