About Cannery Cafe

All-day cafe on Moncton Street doing brunch, fusion paellas, eggs benedict and handmade Shanghai dumplings. Fans of Once Upon a Time will recognize the frontage as Granny's Diner. Family-friendly with a kids' menu and a private room for groups.

Television crews found this frontage before most visitors did. Once Upon a Time dressed the building as Granny's Diner, and people still stop on the Moncton Street sidewalk to line up the same shot. Behind the facade the Cannery Cafe runs an all-day kitchen, which in Steveston means brunch continuing well past the hour most rooms stop caring about it.

The cooking crosses a few lines on purpose. Western brunch plates share a menu with Chinese and fusion dishes, which sounds like two restaurants under one roof until you have spent enough time in Richmond to find the combination completely ordinary. That is what a city with this demographic history produces when a kitchen cooks for everyone who walks in rather than for a single idea of what a cafe should be. Steveston in particular draws a mixed crowd: village regulars, weekend visitors from across the region, and families who have been coming to the same block for three generations.

Summer here is a parking problem with a fishing village attached. On a weekend between May and September, leaving the car up around Chatham or Third Avenue and walking down beats circling the streets near the boardwalk. Winter is a completely different place. The crowds go, the light turns grey, and the village returns to the people who live in it. That is the version of Moncton Street worth planning a morning around.

What to Do in Richmond on a Rainy Day

Richmond rain does not arrive as a storm. It settles in for nine days. Here is the rotation I actually use when it does: the Oval, the Golden Village malls, the library and gallery at Minoru, Riverport with the kids, and why Steveston is better wet.

Richmond BC Photo Spots

Richmond does not hand you a view the way downtown Vancouver does. What it gives you is sea-level horizons, fog on the dyke, working boats, and the No. 3 Road corridor after rain. Here are the spots I keep going back to, and when the light is right at each.

Richmond BC Fall Family Activities

Fall is the best season in Richmond and I will argue about it. The dyke in low light, snow geese off Sturgeon Bank, pumpkin fields on the east side, bog trails nobody uses, and a proper indoor plan for the weeks when it rains for nine days straight.
